6 Things to Do on Cold and Rainy Days

Is is too chilly for the park but your little kids are going stir crazy at home? Are you stuck indoors again after three days of rain? Well hey, this blog might give you some ideas on what to do in the Hornsby/Berowra area on a cold or rainy day.

1. Let's start with my favourite.... the library! First is it free, second they have great heating, third my local library is often really quiet and sometimes we are the only ones there. Go read some books and borrow some books or DVDs for entertainment at home. A trip to the library is a great way to break up the day. You might even get lucky and go on a day when story time is on (10.30am on Fridays at the Balcony Room in Berowra Community Centre by the way).

2. Little Mess Makers. An hour of unstructured, messy play in an indoor venue and you don't have to clean up afterwards. Little Mess Makers is an awesome activity any day, but a fantastic idea for a cold or rainy day. You can visit casually and pay on the day as well. We go to Hornsby Heights on Mondays but sessions are also held throughout the week at Castle Hill, West Pennant Hills and Gordon, and occasionally on weekends too. It costs $17 for 1 to 5 years olds, but there is a sibling discount and siblings under 1 are free.

3. Some people avoid playgroup on rainy days but I say do it! Well it depends on the playgroup venue as some don't have a big indoor space. You can attend playgroup casually and the cost is between $3 to $6. Some playgroups with a larger indoor space suitable for cold and rainy days include St Marks Church on Tuesdays in Berowra, Mount Colah Bush Babies on Wednesday and Fridays, and playgroup inside Mt Kuring-gai Community Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays

4. Softplay at Moving Bodies. Thank heavens for Softplay in the Mount Kuring-gai Industrial Area. There is a separate area for 0 to 2 years old and great play equipment to keep the older kids entertained. There is space to eat and you can bring your own food or order food and coffee from the cafe on site. They are open every weekday and some weekends. Entry is $4 to $10 depending on the age of your child.

5. You could strap them in the stroller and wonder around Hornsby Westfield (a perfectly good option) or you could take them to Wannabees. Open everyday with no bookings required, Wannabees Play Town is a great activity for a cold or rainy day. It is better suited to preschoolers who are more interested in imaginative play, rather than babies and younger toddlers. It normally costs $15 per kid and $5 per adult.

6. Magpies Waitara has a softplay area for the kids that you can see from the dining area. It is a great place to grab a meal or a coffee and let the little ones blow off some steam. They also have school holiday entertainment such as kids movies, perfect for cold and rainy days.
